چکیده

Every language contains complex expressions that are language-specific. The general problem when trying to build au tomated translation systems or human-readable dictionaries is to detect expressions that can be used idiomatically and then whether the expressions can be used idiomatically in a particular text, or whether a literal t ranslat ion would be preferred. It follows from the definition of idiomatic expression that when a complex expression is used idiomatically, it contains at least one element which is semantically "out of context". In this paper, we discuss a method that finds idiomatic collocations in a text corpus. The method detects semantic a symmet ry by taking advantage of differences in syntactic distributions. We demonstra te the method using a specific linguistic phenomenon, verb-object collocations. The asymmet ry between a verb and its object is the focus in our work, and it makes the approach different from the methods that use e.g. mutua l information, which is a symmetric

Lexical or syntactic control of sentence formulation? Structural generalizations from idiom production.

To compare abstract structural and lexicalist accounts of syntactic processes in sentence formulation, we examined the effectiveness of nonidiomatic and idiomatic phrasal verbs in inducing structural generalizations. Three experiments made use of a syntactic priming paradigm in which participants recalled sentences they had read in rapid serial visual presentation. Prime and target sentences co...

How to Account for Idiomatic German Support Verb Constructions in Statistical Machine Translation

Support-verb constructions (i.e., multiword expressions combining a semantically light verb with a predicative noun) are problematic for standard statistical machine translation systems, because SMT systems cannot distinguish between literal and idiomatic uses of the verb. We work on the German to English translation direction, for which the identification of support-verb constructions is chall...

Using chunked corpora for the acquisition of collocations and idiomatic expressions

This paper1 discusses the use of recursive chunking of large German corpora (over 300 million words) for the identification and partial classification of significant lexical cooccurrences of adjectives and verbs. The goal is to provide a fine-grained syntactic classification of the data at the levels of subcategorization and scrambling. We analyze the combinatory preferences of adjectives with ...

Learning Phrasal Verbs Through Conceptual Metaphors: A Case of Japanese EFL Learners

Recent research in cognitive linguistics has shown that idiomatic phrases are decomposable and analyzable and that the individual words in idiomatic phrases systematically contribute to the overall figurative interpretations. This cognitive linguistic view suggests that enhancing awareness of conceptual metaphors embedded in the individual words may help second language students to learn idioms...

Object and Action Naming: A Study on Persian-Speaking Children

Objectives: Nouns and verbs are the central conceptual linguistic units of language acquisition in all human languages. While the noun-bias hypothesis claims that nouns have a privilege in children’s lexical development across languages, studies on Mandarin and Korean and other languages have challenged this view. More recent cross-linguistic naming studies on children in German, Turkish,...
